Navigating the World of Interior Design: Decorator, Designer, or Architect?

Interior Design 101: Understanding the Roles of Decorators, Designers, and Architects

OCTOBER 31, 2023

Have you ever needed to make updates to your home, realized you need help, but then you may have found yourself confused by who can actually make it happen? Oftentimes, the terms of "interior decorator," "interior designer," and "interior architect" are (mistakenly!) used interchangeably, which is confusing for those who don’t work in the field and know the distinctions. That’s why we’ve created this comprehensive guide so that you can understand the differences between each. We’re also diving into the recent licensing changes in the state of Illinois and what that means for you and what you need to look out for when selecting a service.

Interior Decorator:

  • Interior decorators in a few works focus mainly on the aesthetics of a space. Decorators specialize in selecting decor items and finishes that enhance the visual appeal of a space. If you’re looking for help when choosing the right color schemes, furniture, artwork, and accessories, an interior decorator is potentially the right fit. It’s important to note that decorators not typically involved in structural changes or architectural modifications, so if you’re looking to remodel your kitchen or bathroom, you’ll likely need additional help!

Interior Designer:

  • Interior designers (like our team at Inspired Interiors) cover a broader scope of services compared to interior decorators. While aesthetics are essential, as interior designers we go beyond the surface-level finishes. Our aim is to transform interior spaces from top to bottom, both functionally and aesthetically. Interior designers must possess a comprehensive understanding of spatial planning, materials, lighting, and ergonomics. Interior designers will often be leveraged for residential or commercial projects that involve in redesigning, reconfiguring, and renovating interior environments. Our expertise has an emphasis on improving the functionality of spaces. We work closely with architects and contractors to bring our designs from concepting to completion.

Interior Architect:

  • The term "interior architect" may be a term you have never earn heard before. While some professionals use this title, it's not one that has widespread usage, and its meaning can vary. Generally, an interior architect combines architectural and interior design skills, often focusing on the structural aspects of a space. In essence, they bridge the gap between architectural elements and interior design to create spaces that are both functional and visually appealing.

Recent Licensing Changes in Illinois - they've made a change in the licensing game this year (finally)! Now, licensed interior designers in Illinois can stamp their own drawings on permits for smaller renovation projects. That means they don't have to recruit an architect into the mix for simple jobs (ex: rehabbing projects). This is a significant step toward recognizing the expertise of interior designers in shaping interior spaces and streamlining the design process.

Questions to Ask When Hiring Help For Your Home

All of this terminology can make the average homeowner very confused. Architects sometimes call themselves designers, further adding to the confusion. To keep things straight, here are some questions to ask when hiring an interior design pro:

  • Where did you receive your education and training?

  • Are you licensed, and if so, in which areas?

  • What is the extent of your experience in interior design?

  • What specific role did you play in the projects you're showcasing?

What to Remember

In the world of interior design, it's important to know the difference between decorators, designers, and architects. Recent changes in licensing, like the ones in Illinois, are shaking things up. They're recognizing that interior designers have what it takes to shape both the look and functionality of your space. As a savvy consumer, always ask the right questions and get to know the qualifications and skills of your chosen design pro. A well-designed space can change your life, so make sure you've got the right person for the job.
